Otters Class Blog – 23.2.18

We have been resilient practising our take away (subtraction) by using an empty number line.  We have been taking 10 away and then other two digit numbers from numbers in to the 100s. (Esme)

In topic we were curious and looked at different  resources to find out what Captain Scott and his team would have worn, eaten, taken with them and what they did in the South Pole.  (Eden H) They studied Penguin eggs because they wanted to find out if penguins are related to dinosaurs.  This is called Zoology (Fin.)

On Wednesday we went on a school trip to Cambridge to the Botanical Gardens and the Polar Institute.  We looked at different glasshouse with a variety of climates.  The mountain glasshouse was cold and the desert was dangerous because it had lots of spiky plants in it.  (Alyssa). The Rainforest glasshouse was huge and hot and damp.  It had some lovely plants in it, a Bird of Paradise and a Strangler Fig.

At the Polar Institute we learnt more about Captain Scott and his team who explored the South Pole.  We looked around the museum and filled in a sheet showing what they would have packed to take with them. (Ben McG.)  We also saw a Polar Bear skin.

In English we wrote a recount of our trip to Cambridge which was a very busy and exciting day.

Otters Blog – 19.1.18

This week we had a special delivery.  It was a box with a penguin inside.  We were curious to know why it was here and where it had come from.  We still are yet to find out.  We have used the i-pads to share information to make our penguin speak.  We used an app called Chatterpix Kids to do this. Working collaboratively we produced some very funny and amazing videos.  We have been creative and collaborative when we put together a dance routine. Also we have learnt a new story called Lost and Found.  We have followed a story map and used actions to tell it.  Come and see the photographs of new actions we have made up ourselves.   We listened to very peaceful and relaxing music about the rainforest.  We thought of words to describe how we felt when we listened to it.  In maths, we have been resourceful using number lines and our knowledge of partitioning to help us add and solve word problems.  This week we were curious to find out about the rainforest, deserts and polar regions.  We learnt about animals, plants and climate there. Our topic books are now filled with many pictures showing these places. We have been reflective thinking about what we have learnt and also editing and improving our work to make it better. We also elected two new Class Council Reps.  Well done to Kara-Mae and Thomas.

My favourite has been using Chatterpix Kids (Harry, Scarlett))My favourite has been listening to the music. I liked The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Kara-Mae)My favourite was drawing, colouring and labelling the Sahara Desert and the Polar regions.(Charlie H)My favourite was using number lines to help us add (Eden H)

Otters Blog – 9.2.18

This week we have shown all of our Tree for Good Learning qualities in planning our text map for our writing today.  We were collaborative in coming up with ideas to describe a rainforest scene as a class, Then we were resourceful in using those ideas in writing our own phrases and short descriptive sentences. We were very creative in our ideas and curious in finding out about different rainforest animals and plants.  We then had to edit our own work making us reflective and resilient.

In science we were again curious as we tested different materials to see if they were waterproof or not.  We poured water on to them, using pipettes.   We discovered that tin foil is waterproof and that our socks are not!

We have been doing maths quizzes this week which have been rather hard work, and we have been very resilient, so we are ready for our half term holidays.  We have also been practising our times tables.

In PE we have again been creative learning our Penguin Dance with Mrs Ash, using our own ideas.  On Tuesday we did some Internet Safety work, as it is Internet Safety week.  We looked at the story Chicken Clicking and had lots of discussion about how we stay safe when using the internet.  We are sure that all of us have come home and discussed internet safety at home.

Otters Blog – 2.2.18

This week we have been resilient learning our 5 times tables and practising our 10s times tables.  We have been solving maths problems by using arrays where we have to be careful to make sure we have the right number of dots in our columns.

In English we have started writing a description of a setting from part of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.  We have been very creative in our use of different words.  We described the setting using adjectives, verbs and prepositions.  We have written some amazing sentences.

In our topic work we have been resourceful in finding out about Captain Scott and his adventure to the South Pole.  He wanted to be the first person to the South Pole but was unfortunately beaten to it by Roald Amundsen.

On Wednesday we were curious and investigated whether blubber keeps you warm in cold water by putting lard in a bag and then putting our hands in it and plunging them into a bowl of ice.  We decided that it does help protect you from the cold.

In our Art lesson we sketched polar bears with chalks and charcoal and also sketched a background to make a lovely picture for a display.

Otters Blog – 26.1.18

This week we have been very busy again. Mrs Buckley has worked us very hard.  Lucie has enjoyed practising her times tables. We have all been resilient and continued to practise these.  We now feel that we know our ten times table much better. Next week we will be learning our 5 xtable.  In PE Amber liked walking like a penguin and travelling in different ways.  We worked collaboratively to make our dance better. Harry enjoyed drawing his block graph.  We had to take data from a tally chart and put it into a block graph. See our display in the classroom. Ben enjoyed golden time, drawing himself in chalk, catching snowflakes on his tongue.  We were creative when we did this.  In challenge time, Albie enjoyed making penguins.  We were creative in this too.  We have also written some amazing descriptions of a setting for the South Pole.  We were all prasied and felt very proud of our work. Alyssa said the music was fun this week when we listened to rainforest music and sounds. We also looked at a picture and had to imagine what it was like to be there and how we would feel.

Otters Blog – 12.1.18

Our new topic is Hot and Cold.  We have been learning about the different countries that are hot and cold.  To help us we have been practising our map skills. We have looked at maps in an atlas.  We now know that there are 7 continents and 5 oceans in the world.

In our challenge time, we made snow globes and snowflakes to decorate the classroom.

In maths we have been resilient and resourceful.  We have learnt how to partition numbers and used this to help us add.  We have been resilient because we have continued to keep trying until we have got better at this. We also have worked collaboratively to solve sums together. Today we were able to solve word problems using what we had learnt and were all put on silver because of our continued hard work.

In English we have been reading poems.  We have worked collaboratively to write our own spine poems about a snowflake.  Later in the week we worked independently to write an acrostic poem.

We have been very creative and have made lots of animals for our rainforest display.  We used pastel, collage and paint to draw and decorate these. For our Inuit display, we sketched people and animals and then used water colour paints to decorate. Miss Davenport thought our displays looked great!

Otters Class Blog – 24.11.17

In maths we have been learning how to recognise which number is greater than another.

32 > 15

15 < 32

We also have learnt how to add ten to a number. We have been resourceful using numicon and number lines to help us.  We have been resilient by practising how to add a 2 digit number using a number line.

In English, we have continued to write instructions.  We have worked collaboratively to think up ideas.  We have been creative writing our own instructions on how to wash, train or look after our mythical woodland creature.

In PE we have been resilient trying and trying to improve our exercises.  Mrs Ash has set us a challenge to complete in 2 weeks!

On Thursday, we had the fire service visit and we learnt how to escape from  a fire safely.  We also learnt about tools and equipment on board the fire engine.  We have been reflective  using what we learnt from the day to help us with our instruction writing.
