Otter’s Blog 15.11.19

This week we have been practising our times tables and trying to answer sums quickly. Also, we have been using rulers to measure lengths of objects and lines.  We have practised measuring in cm. Today we measured parts of a Pudsey Bear and then put them together. (Frankie and Harry)

On Wednesday we went on a fantastic school trip learning about World War Two.  (Reggie) Ella T favourite part was going underground to see the Air Raid Shelter. We had to listen to noisy planes and sirens. Madeline enjoyed learning  about  being evacuated and finding out what children packed in their suitcase. Harley liked listening to the man talking to us about being a child living in World War Two. We were given a peg and lolly pop stick to make a plane.Evie liked hearing the siren when the ARP Warden showed us. We also made potato truffles. They didn’t taste very nice to most of us but Harry and Lacie D did like them. We then wrote recounts of our school trip.

On Friday we celebrated Children in Need. Reggie liked playing the games on the playground and searching for Pudsey Bears. Our class decorated a cake to look like Pudsey Bear. We also went swimming. Our teachers were very impressed by how our swimming has improved. Our Golden Learners are Alfie and Henry.

Otters Class Blog – 27.9.19

In English we have been reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We have done lots of work around the story.  We drew a map of her walk through the woods, we described the wolf and thought of lots of amazing adjectives.

In topic we have been learning all about Florence Nightingale.  She lived from 1820 to 1910 and came from a wealthy family.  She had to attend lots of parties, but all she really wanted to do was make people better and be a nurse.  To start with her parents did not want her to be a nurse, but after she had nursed members of her own family, they supported her choice.

In PHSE we talked about belonging and thought about how it feels to be left out.  We thought of ways to include everyone and to make sure that everyone has a turn.

For maths this week we have been subtracting using different strategies.  We have learnt how to use a blank number line.  To take away we have to jump backwards to make sure we are counting down.

Today we went swimming and we were learning how to swimming on our backs and some of us were using ‘sinkers’ which we had to either catch in the water or fetch from the bottom of the pool.

Otter’s Blog Our First Week complete!

We have enjoyed our first PE lesson in Year 2.  Evie liked it when we played a game where we had to race against our partner to see who could get back to our place in the line first.

Lacey liked it when we played a maths game. We had to roll a die to draw out an otter. For example, when we rolled a 4 we had to draw a tail.

Isla enjoyed sorting pictures of heroes and villains. We had to think about why they were a hero or villain.

Charlie liked learning about how to become a student council officer. Today we have been given nomination forms to complete. Voting for officers will take place next week.

Prim liked painting ourselves using the watercolour paints. For our skin tone we had to colour mix too.

Thalia enjoyed making our own talent paper chain. We then joined all of our chains together to make one long class chain. It showed that Otter’s Class have many talents. These include: being brave, good at reading, being kind, a good friend, good at maths and sports.

Lacie enjoyed decorating our front covers for our topic books. We stuck pictures of heroes and villains onto the cover.

Next week, we will begin to learn all about these fictional and real life heroes and villains.

In English, we have been creating our own story maps for a different version to “The Storm Seal”

We had to change the character, setting, problem and resolution. (Liam, Scott)

In maths, we have been learning how to take away using a number line to help. We also have reminded ourselves that less than, subtract, minus, difference between all mean to take away. (Asa)

We practised subtracting 2 digit numbers from a 2 digit or 3 digit number.

In the afternoons and during Guided Reading, we have been learning about seaside holidays in the past.

We have found out that people didn’t like to show off their skin when they were on the beach during Victorian times. (Charlie-Roy)

People used bathing machines to change in. (Jenson, Hope M)

Only rich people or upper class could afford to visit the seaside for a holiday. Poorer people could not afford to go on holiday.

Scarborough and Brighton were very popular places to visit. (Elsie-May)

People went bathing in the sea and men and women sometimes had their own beach. (Farrah)

In Guided Reading we learnt a new word “wealthiest” which means richest. (Ozzy)

On Wednesday we had one of our visits to the Junior School and spent the whole day there.  We really enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed seeing the older children. (Hope G)

Today, we have our Summer Fayre so we have been practising “What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?” with actions. Also we have been practising and learning songs to sing at our Leavers Service. (Liliana)

Captain Blackbeard

We have been writing a fact file about pirates. We have used all of the information we have learned in this topic to help us do this.  Last week we researched famous pirates and also completed a fact file about them.

We have written instructions to explain how to clean a pirate ship. Lola has been chosen as our Gold Learner because of her good writing.

In topic, we had to think about what we would need to survive if we were stranded or shipwrecked on a desert island.  We drew our own maps with natural and man-made objects to show what would be useful.  This included a forest for wood, a lake for water and fish.

During the week we have been busy completing some maths quizzes. We have all worked very hard to finish these as best we can.  When we have been outside we collected natural things from the environment. We then used watercolour paints to colour mix and make the same colour as that item.

We searched for mini-beasts and treasure in the forest area too.

Today we have all dressed up as pirates and have had a maths café this afternoon.
