Class 4 – Crickets 2014-15

Crickets Class Weekly Blog wc. 27.4.15

In outdoor learning we have been building minibeast hotels.

In Maths we have been finding the difference between two numbers. We have used numicon and number lines to help us to find the answers.

We have been finding out about minibeasts and we have written our own descriptions of minibeasts. We tried to keep the description a mystery (we didn’t want people to be able to guess which minibeast we were describing).

Next week we are going to be learning about the Amazon Rainforest, so we have a new role-play area.

This week we have read the book ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’. We have created our own versions of the story but our stories are all about fruit. We have been learning about adjectives and we have used these in our stories.

In Maths we have been using rulers to measure different plants using cm. We have also been solving addition and subtraction number sentences using number lines. Some of us drew our own number lines and recorded the jumps.

We have painted different vegetables and created a display in the hall.

These are some of the plants and flowers that we found around school.

This week we started our new topic. It is called ‘Gardens of the World’. Mrs Wilkin’s from Belford’s Garden Centre came into school on Monday to talk to us about plants and her job.

In Maths we have been counting in 2’s and 10’s. Some of us have been beginning to use arrays to show multiplication.

We have read the book ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle. We then wrote about the journey of the tiny seed.

In outdoor learning we have been looking at plants around the school and identifying different trees by looking at their leaves.

This term we have got a helper in our class. She is called Miss Dawes. She is working with us on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This week we read the story ‘The Runaway Pizza’. It is very similar to ‘The Gingerbread Man’, except it is a pizza that runs/rolls away instead of a gingerbread man! Miss Hayes was very mean because she didn’t read us the end of the story – we had to create our own endings.

In Maths this week we have been learning how to sole worded problems. We practiced by underlining the key information then we had to write the correct number sentence before finding the answer.

On Thursday we tasted pizzas! Pepperoni was the most popular pizza topping.

This week in Maths we have been using weighing scales to measure. We used the weighing scales to measure out the ingredients to make our own gingerbread men biscuits.

In ICT this week we worked with a partner to create a picture of a gingerbread house. We used the straight line tool and the fill tool.

In Literacy we have read the story of the Gingerbread Man and we have written out the recipe for how to make gingerbread men biscuits. We have also labelled a gingerbread man using different adjectives. Some of us have even used commas. We then turned our labels into a Wanted Poster.

Today it is Comic Relief Day so we have come to school with funny faces, noses, glasses, head bands!

This week we have been learning about The Three Little Pigs. We have retold the story of The Three Little Pigs. We wrote the story. Some of us have been learning about conjunctions and we have written sentences using conjunctions. Do you know what conjunctions are? These are some: because, and, so, but, next, then.

In Maths we have been using money. We have been practicing using coins to make a total.

In groups we made the three little pig’s houses and the big bad wolf tried to blow them down. The brick house was the strongest material.

Yesterday it was World Book Day and we dressed up as our favourite fairy tale characters.
