Caterpillars Class Blog 7.11.14

image001Our new topic this half term is called ‘Bright Sparks’ and because it was November 5th this week we have begun the topic by learning all about Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night.

Max really enjoyed the history and has learnt that, ‘Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament but some of the King’s guards caught him.’ Oscar J knows that the King was ‘King James I’.

We copied the style of Andy Goldsworthy and made firework pictures outside using sticks and leaves.

We made more firework pictures using paint and we blew the paint with a straw.

We also made 3d rockets with our tubes we had been collecting over the holiday.

We have looked at firework poems, identifying the rhyming words and adjectives that describe the sounds, appearance and the way fireworks move. Some of our favourite firework words are;

Fizzing!!     Dazzling!!   Zoom!!   Diving!!   Twirling!!   Sparkling!!   Crackle!!

We have also written this poem together as a class;

Pop! Whizz!

Rockets zoom in the sky.

Sparkles! Magic!

Colours way up high.

In maths we have been learning about 2D shapes. Counting the sides and corners and ensuring we know their correct names. We have also thought about the different ways we could sort them. This picture shows one idea we came up with.

On Friday we investigated making triangles with different length sides. Oliver and Oscar were very deeply involved in this activity.

Mrs Burt also set us some Guy Fawkes challenges. One was to make a Guy like children used to do years ago, ready to put on top of the bonfire.

Here is our South Wootton Infant School Guy.

Our other challenges were to make the Houses of Parliament using wooden bricks and to think about the different ways Guy Fawkes could have arranged the 36 barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament back in 1606.

It has been a great start to our topic so far and we are looking forward to continuing the topic learning about Diwali, The Great Fire of London and of course Christmas. Don’t forget to look at our topic map on the website to see all the exciting learning that will be taking place this half term.
